That's a cattle gun. It's a metal pneumatic piston that really quickly pops about 2-3 inches out of the handle and then shoots back in. Farmers use them to kill cattle before they are processed for meat, or if they are sick beyond recovery. They just trigger it right into the head and it's instantaneous death and leaves no evidence of any sort of 'bullet' or metal slug, unlike a gun. It's powered by the air tank that he he carries; it's just compressed air that flows into the tube to the handle and triggers the pistons- very dangerous 'weapon'.

Actually, it contains a small spring-loaded rod, and the air compression makes it burst out very fast(into the brain) and then return back into the handle-grip, thus leaving no bullets, casings, or exit wounds. Very smart way to off somebody! Also, an amazing movie.
I forget what its actually called, but its used to kill cattle. All it does is blast a huge amount of air pressure. So much that it actually can pierce your head and brain.
